Minnesota to join federal unemployment extension program

Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Carissa Wyant Staff Writer

Laid-off workers who have exhausted their unemployment benefits may find some reprieve from a new federal program.

Gov. Tim Pawlenty authorized Minnesota's participation in the federal Emergency Unemployment Compensation (EUC) program Tuesday.

It provides up to 13 additional weeks of benefits to workers who exhausted benefits after April 30 and are still seeking employment as of July 6, a release detailed.

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development will notify approximately 50,000 potentially affected individuals by mail, but DEED said that many of those individuals have already found employment.

The program expires on June 30, 2009.
