Volunteer Attorney Program
 
General Information

The Volunteer Attorney Program is a non-profit organization providing free legal services to income-eligible clients in Northeastern Minnesota.

Although the majority of our caseload is family law (divorce, custody, visitation, adjudication) and bankruptcy, we provide representation in all areas of civil law.

   Call the number(s) above for intake information.
  You can telephone the Volunteer Attorney Program to see if you are eligible for the services provided. Once you have been accepted for service, informational papers will be sent to you to fill out. When those papers are returned to the office, along with a $35 non-refundable fee, the Program contacts area lawyers who volunteer their time to represent our clients.

Who We Serve

Area(s) Served:  Aitkin, Carlton, Cass, Cook, Crow Wing, Itasca, Kanabec, Lake, Pine, Saint Louis

Income Guidelines: 
  Your family's income should be at or below 125.0% of the poverty level.

A sliding fee program is available to serve people up to 187.5% of poverty in the areas of family law and bankruptcy.
 
 
Type of Help
This group provides the following types of services based on your legal needs and its resources:
 
  Full Legal Representation- The Volunteer Attorney Program's caseload includes the following cases: Divorce, Bankruptcy, Visitation/Custody, Adjudication, Adoption, Name Change, Wills and Estates, Education, Landlord/Tenant, Public Housing, Social Security, SSI, Worker's Comp, Job Discrimination, Collection, Contracts, Immigration, Individual Rights, Incorporation, and Tort Defense. Volunteer Attorney Program does not accept criminal cases.
  Pro Se Legal Clinic- The Pro Se Attorney Assisted Divorce Clinic allows eligible clients to complete do-it-yourself divorce paperwork to obtain a divorce.
  Other- The Volunteer Attorney Program also has a mediation component, Northland Mediation Service, that provides assistance in solving family, neighborhood, consumer and other disputes.

Kids First, is an eight-hour parental education seminar designed to help divorcing or separating couples focus on the best interests of their children during this difficult time. Sessions are scheduled every Thursday evening at one of four locations throughout the five counties in our service area.
