MINNESOTA HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF RESOURCES
Welcome to Minnesota.
ATTENTION KATRINA EVACUEES IN MINNESOTA
FEMA is extending the Minnesota-run Interim Sheltering Program rental assistance for Katrina evacuees until FEMA makes a decision on your getting rental assistance directly from FEMA.
The Metro HRA and the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency were notifying all recipients of the state’s Interim Sheltering Program. Landlords were to receive notices, too. If you have not received a letter, call our Katrina Legal Hotline.
FEMA said it will give you and the State of Minnesota 30 days notice before transitioning you from the Minnesota-run program to rental assistance from FEMA.
Contact FEMA to APPLY FOR FEMA RENTAL ASSISTANCE, at 1-800-621-3362, if you have not already done so.
To be eligible for FEMA rental assistance, you must show:
1) You have a FEMA number;
2) You lived in a county declared a disaster;
3) Katrina made your home uninhabitable. A FEMA inspector will have to make a report about the condition of your home;
4) You have a “housing plan”, that means you are making progress toward getting “permanent” and “adequate” housing;
5) You have not yet gotten “permanent” and “adequate” housing.
These are very important terms and can be tricky:
If you do not know if you want to return to the Gulf Coast, tell FEMA.
If you do not know in which town or city you want to relocate, tell FEMA.
Your housing may be inadequate if:
It is not large enough for your family;
It is not convenient to your work or your children’s schools;
You have not yet found a job that will allow you to pay the rent and utilities.
Call the statewide Katrina Legal Hotline at 1-800-292-4150 if you have legal problems or questions about rental assistance. Legal Aid lawyers and the Minnesota Bar Association’s volunteer lawyers, who work on a variety of legal problems, can be accessed through this Hotline.
