Can a court judgment against me from a lawsuit affect my Minnesota driver's license?
Dear Senior Legal Line:
Can a court judgment against me from a lawsuit affect my Minnesota driver's license? I forgot to pay my car insurance and it lapsed. Before I could get the insurance back, I got into a car accident. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but both my car and the other driver's car sustained damage. Also, I was very lucky not to get a traffic ticket for not having insurance. However, now more trouble is happening: the other driver's insurance company sent me a letter saying that I have to pay the cost to fix the other driver's car and if I don't, the insurance company says they'll sue me. What's more, if the company wins the lawsuit and I don't pay the judgment, the company says that I could lose my driver's license. I live on a fixed income of Social Security benefits and couldn't even repair my own car, much less pay to fix the other driver's car. Is it true that I could lose my driver's license if I don't pay?
