Minnesota Legal Advice Online is a website where people can post a legal question for a volunteer lawyer. The site is free and secure, with the questions & answers being only between the lawyer and client. Questions can be created and posted 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Volunteers cannot help with forms, make phone calls, or offer consultation or representation. They can only provide brief advice to legal questions via the site. Questions remain open for a month, during which time lawyers can view and respond. Unfortunately not every question will be answered. If you need immediate assistance, do not wait to look for other help.

Application Process

Visit the site to complete a short screening process that asks about income, where you live, and type of legal question. Then answer additional questions to describe your legal problem and create a posting which will be visible to volunteer lawyers. You may create and post questions any time of day; lawyers review and respond to questions on their own schedules. Questions remain open for a month, during which time lawyers can view and respond. Unfortunately not every question will be answered. If you need immediate assistance because of a hearing or deadline, do not wait to look for other help.
